Portraits, Figures, People

About this Show

Portraits, Figures, People at bj spoke gallery in 2023.

This was a retrospective show. The earliest of the paintings was made in the 1980’s; the latest was created in 2023.  You can see the approximate date of each along with the title when you click the image.

I have chosen figure paintings for this show, although my work includes landscapes, seascapes, flower paintings, and yes, abstract paintings as well.

While there has been consistency in theme and technique for past “solo” exhibitions at bj spoke gallery, my work has hardly been consistent when viewed overall. Sometimes a “realist,” sometimes storyteller and poet,  printmaker, watercolorist,  or painter in oils and acrylics, I have always been restless in my approach to painting, rethinking and experimenting as I go along – finding new subjects to paint and ways to interpret those subjects.

The poem below will reveal more about my approach to painting:

To Painting

You stand there, waiting,
You mock me,
Challenge.

I suspect that you will drop the glove
When I had hoped to avoid a duel.

That time, when we contended in the arena,
We danced a three legged dance
And no one was the winner.

So now I approach you,
Ready for trouble.
