The monotypes in this series are visual responses to Ulalume, a poem by Edgar Poe. I loved the poem in childhood and love it still for its wonderful metaphors and mysterious, broody quality. You can see the full poem at http://poets.org/poem/ulalume.
The works in this series are monotypes with some collage and painted elements. They are large scale (22X30″) and many (but not all) were created by inking an acrylic plate and using a spatula to subtract the ink and thus create the image. Some of the pictures used cutout stencils to form the white areas. The stencils prevented the ink from reaching the paper, as the plate went through the printing press. Collage elements and paint could then be added when the plate was dry.
